Rainbow Baby

National Rainbow Baby Day falls on August 22nd. As a mother of two Rainbow Babies, I understand the array of emotions that families go through. This day is dedicated to reflecting on their infertility journeys, celebrating the arrival of their miracle babies, and recognising the obstacles they have overcome.

What Does "Rainbow Baby" Mean?

The term "rainbow baby" comes from the idea that after a storm (loss), a beautiful rainbow (new life) appears, and is used to describe a baby born after a miscarriage, stillbirth, or infant loss. It signifies hope and healing after a difficult or heartbreaking experience.

Celebrating the arrival of a rainbow baby is a way to honour the journey of grief and healing, and can evoke complex feelings since joy is interwined with sorrow.
